Composition Class Lesson Plan
|
This short clip shown on the side is a video of a mouse who gets in a troublesome situation after eating too much cheese. A cat comes its way and the mouse struggles its way back into its house. Given the music, it is easy to understand the story line but when the music and sound effects are taken away, the audience are open to their own interpretation. With this video, students can learn composition skills when they are asked to make their own sound track. Here is a possibility of a lesson plan for a composition class.

When starting the class with this clip, it would be best to mute the sound so the students compositions are not influenced by the original sound track. After playing the clip, I would explain to the students what their task is. The task is to create a soundtrack for the clip using whatever tools they are able to use. This would be done in groups of 3 or more people. After the task is explained, ask the students to write down as many notes on the situation, atmosphere, actions, anything they would think is important to take note on. After the video is played several more times, the students will then compare their notes with their peers. Then they would start brainstorming together as the video is played repeatedly. After the given time, the students will then present their soundtracks in groups to their peers. After all is performed the students will watch the full clip with the soundtrack and compare the situations and different possible outcomes or the similarities.
