The following clips are two great contrasting examples of teaching and learning.
|
The first video is a movie clip cut out from August Rush. In the story line of August Rush, a boy named Evan is the protagonist. Evan is an orphan and has never had any musical lessons but he is a musical prodigy.
The clip shows a scene of Hope practicing her piano before she goes to school. As Evan enters the room in curiosity, Hope offers to show Evan the basic notes on the piano. Through some simple acronyms Hope quickly shows Evan the notes and leaves for school. There is the exception that Evan is a prodigy but, Evan immediately picks up on how to play the piano. This bring up a very interesting point about teaching. Hope simply showed Evan the notes on the piano yet he was able to teach himself how to play the piano. As shown in the movie clip, we all have someone to show and share their knowledge of music with us but the actual product is produced from ourselves. Our teachers can only show us how to do certain things but we ourselves have to learn through practice and understanding. If we the students open our minds to listen to the words spoken around us, we are able to learn even greater things than what may be shown. |

On the other hand, there are the students who are willing to learn but their goal is not achievable because of the lack of guidance given to them.
The second clip is taken from the movie Bad Teacher. Elizabeth Halsey is a school teacher who hates her job. She lacks interest in teaching and does not have any motivation for her career. The problem with her hating her job is that the students are affected by it negatively. The lack of motivation to teach causes her to not teach what is meant to be taught in the classroom. As a result her students are misled and they do not learn anything. Although it may not be as extreme as Elizabeth Halsey, there are teachers who act in similar ways in our schools. When teachers allow students to think that learning is not significant, it becomes a problem; no matter what they are learning. If the teacher does not have interest in the subject the students will also follow in the same manner. In order to motive others and bring out curiosity, the person initiating such emotions must have mutual feelings for greater results. |
